What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve which carries the images we see, to the brain. Glaucoma causes rise in the eye pressure, and damages the delicate optic nerve. When the optic nerve fibers are damaged, blind spots develop. These blind spots usually go undetected until the optic nerve is significantly damaged. If the entire nerve is destroyed, it results in blindness.

In its early stage, the patient is not aware of it and in the later stage when the actual complaints starts, already some irreversible damage would have taken place.

Glaucoma is fast emerging as a major cause of blindness in India.

How can you outsmart glaucoma?

After the age of 40 years, an annual eye checkup which includes eye pressure checkup is a must to detect any rise in the eye pressure.

1. If you are a diabetic, the above test becomes more important because this eye problem is more common among diabetics.

2. Any eye complaints like

  • a. Headaches, with no other cause detected.
  • b. Sight problems not corrected with glasses
  • c. Recurrent red and painful eyes
  • d. Seeing colored halos around bulbs especially at night could be due to early glaucoma, don’t neglect them and consult your eye doctor.
